Blending Historical Charm with Modern Luxury in The Heart of Belle Haven

Situated on a picturesque peninsula extending into Long Island Sound, Belle Haven stands as one of the most scenic and sought-after historic residential enclaves along the southeastern Connecticut shoreline. Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of modern landscape architecture, designed this residence park renowned for its coastal homes built between 1884 and 1894 for the Gilded Age’s wealthy elite.

In the heart of Belle Haven in Greenwich, CT, this classic Victorian estate underwent a complete transformation in 2023, seamlessly blending historical charm with modern luxury. The project was a rewarding collaboration with a repeat client, marking our third design journey together over the past six years. 

The interiors are a vibrant expression of color, thoughtfully curated to complement the client’s art collection. Each room offers its own palette while remaining connected to the home’s overall design language. The living room features hand-painted floral walls, setting an elegant tone for the home’s artistic flair. Adjacent spaces showcase hand-blocked printed grass cloth, adding layers of texture and craftsmanship that speak to the attention to detail throughout. 

One of the design challenges was creating a seamless flow between rooms while maintaining distinct identities for each space. This was achieved by carefully balancing bold color choices with harmonious transitions. The library, for example, is lacquered in a rich, vibrant hue that contrasts beautifully with linen window treatments and woven bamboo shades. These shades frame windows meticulously reproduced to honor the home’s original architecture. 

Custom furnishings and elements like the honey abaca rug were designed specifically to enhance each room’s character, providing warmth, and grounding the design. Expansive family entertaining rooms flow effortlessly from one to the next, maximizing natural light and spacious proportions while retaining a cozy, inviting atmosphere. 

This renovation is a true testament to the power of bespoke design. It’s a home where classic architecture meets contemporary living, creating a sophisticated yet welcoming environment. From the custom wall treatments to the masterful use of color, every detail was executed with precision, reflecting a deep understanding of both tradition and the client’s unique vision.
